This has been on my Bucket List for a long time and I finally did it! A snorkeling tour of Silfra where the astonishing clarity of the water reveals a mesmerizing underwater world full of colors you can’t even imagine from the drab silver surface water. Silfra is a fissure created by the separation of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates cutting through Iceland. The Silfra fissure fills with glacial water that has been filtered underground for decades through hardened, porous lava rock. The filtering process of the glacial water makes Silfra one of the clearest bodies of water on earth with up to 400ft/ 120 meters of visibility (and tastes great!).

It was definitely one of the most challenging things I’ve ever done. It was extremely uncomfortable wearing the dry suit (they have to put tight bands right around your neck and wrists to stop the 34’F/2’C water getting into your suit and you wear a neoprene full head mask, gloves and snorkel mask making it very claustrophobic!). It was freezing cold, rainy and miserable. My lips froze from the intense cold water but overall it one of the most memorable and wonderful experiences which will be a priceless memory forever.
